House Adopts Resolution Honoring Port Allegany
5/25/2016
HARRISBURG – With Port Allegany set to celebrate its bicentennial next month, the state House has unanimously approved a resolution commemorating the event, said Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint), prime sponsor of the resolution.

“It’s great to see the community come together to celebrate its unique history,” Causer said. “It’s always interesting to learn more about our past and how the community has evolved, even as we look forward to the future.”

House Resolution 904 reflects back on the community’s original name of “Canoe Place,” a designation it earned because early settlers built canoes from the abundant white pine trees in the vicinity. Its name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838, and the community was incorporated as a borough in the early 1880s.

Port Allegany will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first settlement of the community with a variety of activities during the week of June 12-18. The celebration will kick off with an opening ceremony, barbershop quartet performance and an ice cream social, all on the town square.

Other events planned include a white elephant and bake sale auction, Pioneers Day picnic, geocaching and scavenger hunts, cemetery walk, car cruise, wagon rides and more.
