Marty worked successfully with Senator Joe Scarnati to enact legislation increasing the payment in lieu of taxes that county and local governments receive from the Commonwealth for state-owned game and forest lands. He continues to work on legislation that would give local communities a share of the revenue from timber, oil and natural gas harvested from state forest lands. By ensuring local communities get their fair share, area residents are less likely to face local tax increases.
In the 2011-12 Legislative Session, Marty has been appointed to serve on the House Appropriations Committee. The committee takes a lead role in the development of the annual state budget and reviews all legislation coming before the House to analyze its fiscal impact on the Commonwealth. He is also serving on the House Health Committee for the first time and continues his service as a member of the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee and the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, on which he serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on Parks and Forests. He also chairs the Legislative Timber Caucus and serves as vice chairman of the Firefighter and Emergency Services Caucus.
Since he was elected to the House in 2002, Marty has made it a priority to ensure state government is accessible to everyone in the 67th District, which includes Cameron, Potter and part of McKean counties. He operates two full-time district offices in Bradford and Coudersport and offers monthly satellite office hours in Emporium and Port Allegany. He also provides a toll-free number so people in the furthest reaches of the district can contact him at no cost.
Marty currently serves as a member of the advisory board of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. He previously served as a director of the Port Allegany Area Economic Development Corporation, as vice president of McKean County’s EMS council and as director of operations for the Port Area Ambulance Service. He formerly worked as a dispatcher at the 9-1-1 center in Smethport and as a part-time police officer for the Borough of Port Allegany.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science. He was elected Annin Township supervisor at the age of 19, a position he held for nine years.
Marty is a member of Saint Mary’s Church in Sartwell. He and his wife, the former Melissa Parry, live in Turtlepoint with their three children, Matthew, Morgan and Mallory.
